Chocolate eggs are one of the symbols of Easter, but keep in mind that chocolate is harmful to our dogs. That is why we have to be very attentive when this time of year arrives and our best furry friend wants to try this sweet.

There are foods that, while satisfying the human palate, are highly toxic for our four-legged friends, and if you are among the many dog and cat owners who, ignoring the recommendations, always give them a piece of food under the table during the meal, then it is good to remember that chocolate is one of those dangerous foods for dogs and cats.

Only about twenty grams of chocolate are enough to cause a risk of serious poisoning. With the Easter season just around the corner it is good to keep this in mind. And it is no coincidence that, according to statistics, during the Easter holidays the number of dogs poisoned by chocolate doubles compared to the other days of the year.

The toxicity of chocolate for dogs is based on the fact that cocoa contains theobromine, a natural stimulant that does not create problems for us, but which could be fatal for our dog companion: this component attacks his nervous system and heart, causing tremors, muscle spasms, seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, nervous breakdowns, high blood pressure, diarrhea and vomiting, which can lead to dehydration of our dog and lead to death. And you have to keep in mind that most sweets contain dark chocolate, which contains the most theobromine.

We know well that our friends always want to peck at our food, so it is essential to pay close attention without forgetting the chocolate that may be within reach in our home, especially if their dogs are experts in climbing everywhere in the house. With the voracity that often distinguishes them before eating, they could also swallow large quantities of chocolate in a few seconds. If this happens, contact your veterinarian immediately.
